During the season Chelsea could only manage a 3rd place finish in the Premier League, finishing 19 points behind champions Manchester City, and were knocked out in the quarter finals of the Champions League after losing 5-4 on aggregate against Real Madrid with Karim Benzema scoring the winning goal in extra time. They did however win the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time in the clubs history, beating Palmeiras 2-1 in the final.
